Avoiding "Anxious Toil" (Ps 127)

A special meeting of the Wellsville Full Gospel Church membership was held on Wednesday evening, May 30, at the church.  The purpose of this meeting was to review and vote on the recommendations from the Site Development Committee and Church Board for proceeding with site preparation work for our proposed new Ministry Center that was presented to the congregation in the Annual Business Meeting in February.  The meeting was well attended with 32 of 49 members in attendance.

Pastor Mason shared a devotional from Psalm 127.  Verse 1 says that unless the Lord builds the house, “… they labor in vain …”   Laboring in vain can be defined as “anxious toil.”  As we seek the Lord to build His house in His way and in His timing, we will not labor in anxious toil.   Pastor also brought out the connection with verses 3 – 5 that speak of the blessings of children.  The common theme is growth:  as the Lord has been adding to our congregation with youth, so also He is adding to our natural building, which will enable us to better reach out to our community.

Pastor recounted some of the wonderful ways we have seen the Lord move on our behalf already, including:

·    National Grid relocated the incoming power pole at no cost to the church

·    Sturdy wooden playground donated by the Cowles family

·    Contacts with Alfred State College, especially with the new Heavy Equipment Trades Program to do our site preparation work

·    Introduction to architect Don Reitz through Pastor Gene Miller of Yorks Corners Mennonite Church

·    Favorable meetings with the local Code Enforcement Officer

On May 2nd a joint meeting of the Site Development Committee (SDC) and the Church Board was held.  In that meeting the Board approved the SDC’s recommendation to proceed this fall with the initial site preparatory work for the pavilion and Ministry Center, based on the Preliminary Site Plan drawing developed by Don Reitz.   This initial site work will entail moving the septic tank, running new underground electric service from the new power pole and removing the old pole, and doing the earthmoving work in preparation for the pavilion.  Depending on the progress we may be able to make, we hope also to complete the pavilion itself as part of this first phase of the work.

The meeting included a question-and-answer time, including a “site walk” in which Pastor Mason invited everyone to go outside to see where and how we plan to locate the pavilion and Ministry Center.   Following the discussion, Pastor Mason opened the floor for a motion.  Judy Riley responded and made a motion that the church proceed with the Phase 1 work as recommended by the Site Development Committee and approved by the Church Board, calling it a “wonderful thing.”  Pat Regan seconded the motion.  Voting was then conducted by means of secret ballot.  Ballots were distributed to the membership and collected by Tom Derrick and Bruce Kornhaus.  Tom and Bruce tallied the votes and announced the decision:  unanimous in favor of proceeding!

Full details of the meeting are written up in the minutes which are available in the church office.
